Bali: The Quiet Side

Skip the south. The Bali of rice valleys, jungle waterfalls, clove scented highlands and a black sand coast still belongs to itself.

Why this one

The days, as we would run them

Day one Ubud

Arrive in the green

shoes off

From the airport we head straight up to Ubud, away from the south's traffic and into rice terrace country (about ninety minutes). Settle into a valley you'll hear before you see it, frogs, running water, a temple bell. A first slow dinner, and the holiday has started.

Day two Ubud

Ubud, at its own pace

dawn ridge, river valley

The Campuhan ridge walk at dawn before the heat, the Tegallalang rice terraces in their morning light, and a market wander for the things you'll actually use. An afternoon for a spa hour or simply the pool, Ubud rewards the unscheduled.

Day three Ubud

Temples and makers

water and craft

The holy springs of Tirta Empul, the carved cave mouth of Goa Gajah, and the silver and woodcarving villages in between, Celuk, Mas, where Bali's craft actually happens. Or trade it all for a cycle down through the paddies. Your call; we'll set it up.

Day four Sidemen

East to the Sidemen valley

how Bali used to be

A short drive east (about ninety minutes) into the Sidemen valley, the Ubud of a generation ago, all emerald terraces under Mount Agung. The pace drops another gear: an afternoon walk between the paddies, a weaver's loom clacking somewhere, the volcano coming and going in cloud.

Day five Sidemen

The eastern temples

gates and water palaces

Up before the sun for Lempuyang, the 'gates of heaven' framing Agung, early, ahead of the queue. Then the royal water gardens of Tirta Gangga, stepping stones over koi pools, and a songket weaving village. Back to the valley by mid afternoon.

Day six Munduk

North to the highlands

into the clouds

A longer drive (around three hours) up into the volcanic highlands and the old Dutch hill station of Munduk, cool and misty among clove and coffee. The twin lakes of Tamblingan and Buyan along the way; a waterfall before dinner. Bring a layer, you're at altitude now.

Day seven Munduk

Munduk, water everywhere

waterfalls and a still lake

Jungle deep waterfalls, Sekumpul, the island's most spectacular, or the gentler Banyumala twins, then a dugout canoe across mirror still Lake Tamblingan and the Jatiluwih terraces, a UNESCO sweep of ancient rice. A day that smells of wet green.

Day eight Amed

To the quiet east coast

down to the black sand

Down off the mountain to Amed (about three hours), a string of black sand fishing coves on Bali's far east, no clubs, no crowds, just jukung outriggers drawn up on the beach and Agung standing behind you. Sunset from the shore; the sea is the evening's entertainment.

Day nine Amed

The reef and the wreck

under the surface

Amed is one of Asia's great easy snorkel and dive coasts. Drift the coral just off the beach, or visit the USS Liberty wreck at nearby Tulamben, a WWII ship you can snorkel over, furred in coral and fish. A sunrise jukung paddle for the non divers, and a last slow night.

Day ten Amed → airport

Homeward

the long way back

A final swim, then the coastal road back to the airport (about three hours, we build the day around your flight). You leave Bali the way you should: salt haired, unhurried, already plotting the return.
