The days, as we would run them
Day one
Athens
Arrive in Athens
where the west began
Land in the city that invented the conversation we are still having, then let it wait until morning. We settle you below the Acropolis in Plaka, where the rock glows amber the moment the sun drops. The first night is a slow taverna dinner and an early one, because Greece rewards the unhurried.
Day two
Athens
The Acropolis and the old city
marble and myth
Climb to the Parthenon early, before the heat and the crowds, with a guide who makes the marble speak. The new Acropolis Museum holds what the temples lost, and the afternoon is yours in the lanes of Anafiotika and the markets of Monastiraki. Tonight, a rooftop and a glass of assyrtiko with the floodlit rock for company.
Day three
Mykonos
Sail to Mykonos
the wind, the white, the wild
A fast ferry across the Aegean delivers you to the most glamorous of the Cyclades by lunch. The afternoon belongs to Little Venice, where the sea laps at the doorsteps and the old windmills stand white against the blue. As night falls the island shifts gear, the bars of the Chora filling and the famous Mykonos energy rising.
Day four
Mykonos
A yacht day and the night that follows
sun, sea and the party
Today the sea is the stage. Board a yacht to cruise the south coast, dropping anchor off Super Paradise and the quieter coves for swims, cold drinks and music as the day glows. Come ashore for the beach club scene at Scorpios or Nammos, then let the night carry you deep into the Mykonos you came for.
Day five
Naxos
Cross to Naxos
the real Greece, unpolished
A short hop south brings you to the greenest and most grounded of the islands, where farms still outnumber hotels. Walk up through the Venetian Kastro at dusk to the Portara, the great marble doorway of a temple that was never finished, framing the sun as it sinks. This is the island the locals quietly keep for themselves.
Day six
Naxos
The Naxian interior
mountains, marble, citron
Drive up into the mountains to villages like Halki and Apeiranthos, where marble lanes and citron liqueur and old men over coffee are the whole agenda. Stop where a giant marble kouros still lies half carved in the hillside, abandoned three thousand years ago. Come back down for a long lunch and an afternoon on the soft sands of Plaka beach.
Day seven
Santorini
Ferry to Santorini
the edge of the volcano
The crossing ends with the most theatrical arrival in the Aegean, sailing into a drowned volcano ringed by cliffs. We settle you high on the caldera in Imerovigli or Oia, where every terrace hangs over the blue. Tonight brings the first of the sunsets Santorini is famous for, the sky turning gold then rose over the water, and it earns every word of the fuss.
Day eight
Santorini
Caldera days
the sky on fire
The morning is for the cliff path between the villages, blue domes and white chapels and the sea far below. Spend the afternoon among the vineyards where the assyrtiko tastes of salt and stone, or at Akrotiri, the Pompeii of the Aegean. Then comes the evening ritual, a glass in hand on your terrace as the most celebrated sunset in the world sets the caldera alight.
Day nine
Santorini
The caldera by sea
the sunset from the sea
See the island the way it was meant to be seen, from a catamaran gliding beneath the cliffs. Swim at the red and white beaches, soak in the volcanic hot springs, then sail west as the light begins to turn. Dinner is served on deck while the sun melts into the Aegean, the finest seat in the house for the sunset that made Santorini famous.
Day ten
Santorini
Farewell to the islands
kalo taxidi, safe travels
A slow final breakfast over the caldera before the short flight back to Athens and onward home. You leave with salt in your hair and a little of the Aegean in your chest. Greece has a way of asking you to return, and you will.
