Arrive in Amman
the white cityInto Amman, a friendly capital of pale limestone spread across nineteen hills. After the flight we keep it easy, a first mezze and mansaf, the citadel and the Roman theatre at dusk, an early night.
A rose red city carved from a cliff, the desert Lawrence rode through, Roman ruins and a sea you cannot sink in, Jordan, a small country with a giant share of the world's wonders.
Into Amman, a friendly capital of pale limestone spread across nineteen hills. After the flight we keep it easy, a first mezze and mansaf, the citadel and the Roman theatre at dusk, an early night.
North to Jerash, one of the best preserved Roman provincial cities anywhere, colonnaded streets, temples, a hippodrome where chariots still race. Back to Amman for the downtown souks and a rooftop dinner over the old city.
The ancient Kings Highway south, the mosaic map of Madaba, Mount Nebo where Moses looked out over the Promised Land, the Crusader castle of Kerak on its ridge. Into Petra as the light goes long and gold.
The walk down the narrow Siq, the canyon opening onto the Treasury carved into the cliff, one of travel's great gasps. The Royal Tombs, the colonnaded street, and the long climb to the Monastery above. A two thousand year old Nabataean city in stone.
Little Petra and the high places in the morning, then south into Wadi Rum, the desert of Lawrence of Arabia, towering sandstone mountains rising from red sand. A 4x4 among the rock bridges and canyons, and a Bedouin camp under a galaxy of stars.
Sunrise over the dunes, a camel along an ancient caravan track, the rock arches and the Nabataean inscriptions, the absolute silence. A night in a stargazing bubble tent or a Bedouin goat hair camp, the Milky Way close enough to touch.
North to the lowest point on the surface of the earth, 430 metres below sea level. The impossible float in water so salty you cannot sink, the famous black mineral mud, a spa afternoon. The Baptism Site of Bethany beyond the Jordan nearby.
A slow spa day, or the dramatic canyon and waterfalls of the Mujib reserve for the adventurous. A last float, the salt drying white on your skin, and a sunset over the sea with the hills of Jerusalem glowing on the far shore.
A last breakfast before the drive up to Amman for your flight (about an hour). Jordan is the rare place where every single day is a headline, Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, and the welcome is as warm as the desert sun.
Three ways to do the same route: Comfort, Premium or Luxe. Breakfasts in. Mix tiers city by city if you like, it is your trip.
