Elephant herds under Kilimanjaro and the big cats of the Mara, balloons over the savannah and the great migration thundering across a river, Kenya, the safari the whole idea of safari came from.

The days, as we would run them
Day one
Nairobi
Arrive in Nairobi
the safari gateway
Into Nairobi, the gateway to the East African plains. After the flight we keep it easy, the orphaned elephants of the Sheldrick Trust, the tall residents of the Giraffe Centre, a first nyama choma dinner, an early night.
Day two
Amboseli
To Amboseli
elephants under the mountain
South to Amboseli, where great herds of elephants move across the plains beneath the snows of Kilimanjaro rising just over the Tanzanian border. An afternoon game drive, the dust and the giants, the mountain catching the last light.
Day three
Amboseli
Amboseli & the Maasai
the great tuskers
Dawn and dusk game drives among the swamps and the big tuskers, some of the last great tusked elephants on earth, the lions and the cheetah, and Kilimanjaro clear at sunrise. A visit to a Maasai village and its warriors. (Amboseli night 3)
Day four
Masai Mara
Fly to the Masai Mara
the jewel of the plains
A light aircraft flight to the Masai Mara, the northern reach of the Serengeti ecosystem and the greatest wildlife theatre in Africa. A first afternoon game drive across the golden grass, lion prides, cheetah on the mounds, and a Rift Valley sunset, sundowner in hand.
Day five
Masai Mara
The Mara, in full
the migration
Full days of game driving across the endless plains, the big cats hunting, the elephants and giraffe and hippo, and, in season (July to October), the great migration: a million wildebeest massing to cross the crocodile filled Mara River. A bush breakfast on the savannah.
Day six
Masai Mara
Balloon over the Mara
a balloon at dawn
Before sunrise, a hot air balloon drifting silently over the plains as the herds wake below, a champagne breakfast on landing. More game drives, the predators and the prey, the unending horizon. The safari of every imagination, and it is real. (Mara night 6)
Day seven
Masai Mara
One more on the plains
the long golden days
A last dawn drive, the lions on a kill, the light long and gold across the grass, the sheer abundance of it. A final Mara sundowner, the Maasai songs around the fire, the southern stars. (Mara night 7)
Day eight
Nairobi
Back to Nairobi
back to the city
The flight back to Nairobi, and a last afternoon, the Karen Blixen house of Out of Africa, the bead and craft markets, a farewell feast. The dust of the Mara still on your boots. (Nairobi night 8)
Day nine
Nairobi → home
Homeward
kwaheri
A last breakfast before your transfer to the airport. Kenya invented the safari, and it still does it best, you leave with a memory card full of cats and a powerful urge to come straight back.
