Saffron robes at dawn, a river village under limestone towers, and the most unhurried country in Asia, Laos, taken slowly on purpose.

The days, as we would run them
Day one
Luang Prabang
Arrive in Luang Prabang
the gentle city
Into the loveliest town in Southeast Asia, a UNESCO peninsula of gilded temples and French villas where the Mekong meets the Nam Khan. A first slow evening at the night market, a Lao dinner, an early night for tomorrow's dawn.
Day two
Luang Prabang
Saffron dawn, turquoise pools
alms and waterfalls
Before sunrise, the tak bat, hundreds of monks filing silently for alms, watched respectfully from a distance. Later, the tiered turquoise pools of the Kuang Si waterfall, a bear sanctuary beside them, and the climb up Phousi hill for sunset over the rivers.
Day three
Luang Prabang
The Mekong & the caves
upriver
A slow boat up the Mekong to the Pak Ou caves, two grottoes crammed with thousands of Buddha statues left by pilgrims, stopping at a whisky and weaving village on the bank. An afternoon among the town's wats and its quiet artisan lanes.
Day four
Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang, at its pace
the unhurried day
Yours to drift, a Lao cooking class with a market tour, the thoughtful TAEC ethnology museum, the royal palace, or simply a café and a book on the riverbank. The town rewards doing very little, beautifully.
Day five
Nong Khiaw
North to Nong Khiaw
into the karst
A scenic drive (about three to four hours, or a boat up the Nam Ou) into the mountains to Nong Khiaw, a riverside village wrapped in sheer limestone karst, one of the most dramatic settings in the country. Settle in to the sound of the river.
Day six
Nong Khiaw
Nong Khiaw, deeper
the viewpoint and the river
A morning climb to the Pha Daeng viewpoint for the karst valley laid out in mist, or a boat further upriver to tiny Muang Ngoi, reachable only by water. Caves, a kayak, a hammock, the slowest day of a slow trip.
Day seven
Vientiane
Back, and south to Vientiane
the sleepy capital
Back down to Luang Prabang and a short flight to Vientiane, surely the most low key capital in Asia. An easy first evening on the Mekong promenade, the river marking the border with Thailand, the sun going down over both.
Day eight
Vientiane
Vientiane, in a day
gold and quiet
The golden stupa of Pha That Luang, the Arc like Patuxai with its city view, the surreal sculpture garden of the Buddha Park, and the moving COPE centre on the country's UXO legacy. A final Lao feast by the river.
Day nine
Vientiane → home
Homeward
khob jai
A last quiet morning before your transfer to the airport. Laos doesn't shout for your attention, which is exactly why it stays with you.
