The great white city on the Atlantic, a mountain town painted every shade of blue, and the storied gateway where Africa meets Europe, the cooler, coastal Morocco the tour buses miss.

The days, as we would run them
Day one
Casablanca
Arrive in Casablanca
the white city
Into Casablanca, Morocco's big, modern, cosmopolitan city on the Atlantic. After the flight we keep it easy, the colossal Hassan II Mosque rising over the ocean, a first tagine, a cocktail at a Rick's Café piano bar, an early night.
Day two
Casablanca
Casablanca & Rabat
art deco and the ocean
The mosque and the art deco heart of Casablanca, then up the coast to the relaxed capital Rabat, the Kasbah of the Udayas above the river, the Hassan Tower, the royal mausoleum and the walled medina. Two faces of modern, Atlantic Morocco.
Day three
Chefchaouen
Up to Chefchaouen
the blue city
Inland and up into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen, the blue city, a medina where every wall, step and door is painted a hundred shades of cobalt and indigo. Arrive as the light softens, the blue glowing, the most photogenic town in Morocco.
Day four
Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen
a hundred shades of blue
The blue medina at dawn before the day trippers, the Spanish mosque on the hill for the view, the mountain springs of Ras El Maa where the women wash wool, the weavers and the goat cheese makers. A slow, blue, mountain day. (overnight Chefchaouen)
Day five
Tangier
To Tangier
the gateway of two seas
North to Tangier, the legendary city where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and Africa faces Europe across the strait. The kasbah and the medina, the Grand Socco, the Caves of Hercules and the windswept Cap Spartel where the two seas meet.
Day six
Tangier
Tangier, deeper
writers and spies
The international city that drew Matisse, Bowles and a century of writers and spies, the American Legation, the Petit Socco cafes, the antique shops and the new art scene. A day across the strait to Tarifa, or to the Roman ruins of Lixus. (Tangier night 6)
Day seven
Tangier
Volubilis & the coast
romans and the coast
A day to the remarkable Roman ruins of Volubilis, its mosaics still bright in the fields, and the imperial city of Meknes with its colossal gate, or the white and blue artists' town of Asilah on its ramparts by the sea. A last northern feast. (Tangier night 7)
Day eight
Tangier
Tangier, slowly
the strait at sunset
A last morning in the kasbah and the medina, a mint tea looking out over the strait to the lights of Spain, the markets and the leather. The cosmopolitan, breezy, end of Africa charm of the north. (Tangier night 8)
Day nine
Tangier → home
Homeward
bslama
A last coffee before your transfer to the airport at Tangier or Casablanca. The north is Morocco at its most laid back and surprising, blue mountains, Atlantic cities and two seas meeting at the tip of the continent.
