The days, as we would run them
Day one
Doha
Arrive in Doha
the gleaming gulf
Into Doha, a futuristic skyline rising from the Gulf in a single generation. After the flight we keep it easy, a first wander through the lanes and shisha cafes of Souq Waqif, the falcons on their perches, an early night.
Day two
Doha
The great museums
art on the water
I. M. Pei's Museum of Islamic Art, a masterpiece on its own island, and Jean Nouvel's National Museum of Qatar, shaped like a desert rose; the restored heritage houses of Msheireb. Souq Waqif again by night, livelier than ever.
Day three
Doha
The Pearl & the Corniche
pearls and skylines
The Katara cultural village and its amphitheatre, the marina and beaches of the man made Pearl island, and the West Bay skyline from a traditional dhow on the bay. The new public art scattered across the city, and a Corniche sunset.
Day four
The Desert
The Inland Sea
where the dunes meet the sea
South across the dunes to Khor Al Adaid, the 'Inland Sea', a UNESCO recognised reserve where the desert runs straight down into the Gulf, a rare sight on earth. A dune drive, a camel, and a night in a luxury desert camp under the stars.
Day five
Doha
Back to the city
mangroves and modern art
Back to Doha, the Mathaf museum of Arab modern art, the campus of Education City, or a kayak through the Al Thakira mangroves and a beach afternoon. The best stopover city in the world, turned into a proper stay. (overnight Doha)
Day six
Doha
Doha, slowly
the easy last day
A last morning of shopping in the gold souk or the malls, a fine dining farewell, a final Gulf sunset from a rooftop. Qatar is small, sleek and easy, and far more interesting than the airport hints. (overnight Doha)
Day seven
Doha → home
Homeward
ma'a as salama
A last Gulf breakfast before your transfer to the airport. Qatar packs museums, a souk, a skyline and a desert sea into a few easy days, the perfect short Arabian escape, or a stopover that deserves to be a stay.
