Most flights into Colombo land late, so we don't make you fight traffic into the city. Twenty minutes from the airport, Negombo's fishing coast lets you land softly, a lagoon sunset, a first rice and curry, an early night. Tomorrow the island opens up.
A morning's drive (about four hours) carries you inland to the dry zone heart of old Lanka. We save the famous rock for a fresh dawn, this afternoon is the gentler one: the Dambulla cave temples, five shadowed grottoes lined with golden Buddhas, then settle in near Sigiriya as the heat lifts.
You climb Sigiriya at opening, before the sun and the crowds, a fifth century sky palace on a 200 metre monolith, frescoed maidens halfway up, the lion's paws at the summit. (Prefer the view of Sigiriya to the climb of it? Neighbouring Pidurangala gives the better photograph.) Then we turn south for Kandy, a spice garden along the way.
A full day in the hill capital the colonisers took last. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic at puja time, the serene Peradeniya botanical gardens, a walk around the lake, and, if you'll have it, an evening of Kandyan drumming and fire dancing.
This is the one you've seen: the slow hill train climbing through tea gardens, doors open, legs swinging, mist rolling past. We've done the seat maths so you just watch the window. By afternoon you're in Ella, a small town wrapped in green.
An unhurried day. Little Adam's Peak at dawn is a forgiving walk for a giant view; the Nine Arches Bridge fills with steam as the train crosses; Ravana Falls and a cup of estate tea fill the rest. Nowhere to be after, which is the whole point of Ella.
A two and a half hour descent from the cool hills to the dry southeast and Yala, the park with the highest leopard density on earth. An evening jeep safari heads out as the heat breaks, elephants, sloth bears, painted storks, and if the day is kind, a leopard draped over a warm rock.
One more drive into the park at first light, the best hour for cats and birds, before we trade the jeep for the ocean. Ninety minutes west, Tangalle's wide quiet beaches are the south coast before everyone found it. Check in; do nothing, on purpose.
No alarm. A beach that mostly belongs to you, a lagoon and a blowhole nearby, and, in season, the night turtles of Rekawa hauling up to nest. Swim, read, eat what came off the boat that morning.
A last unhurried breakfast over the water before the coastal road back toward the airport (about three and a half hours, we time it to your flight, never against it). You leave with sand in everything and a head full of green.
