A Dutch fort, the biggest creature on earth offshore, an elephant herd at dusk, and tea hills called Little England, the south of Sri Lanka, unhurried.

The days, as we would run them
Day one
Negombo
Arrive on the coast
the soft landing
Flights into Colombo tend to land late, so we don't drag you into the city. Twenty minutes from the airport, Negombo's fishing coast is a gentle place to land, a lagoon sunset, a first rice and curry, an early night before the south unfurls.
Day two
Galle
Down to Galle Fort
the rampart town
South on the expressway (about two and a half hours) to Galle, where the Dutch built a walled town on a headland and the present filled it with cafés and boutiques. The ramparts at golden hour, the lighthouse, the lanes, and the Indian Ocean on three sides.
Day three
Galle
Galle, by fort and water
forts and lagoons
The fort by morning light before the heat, then a boat through the mangrove islands of Koggala lake, a cinnamon farm, a temple island, kingfishers everywhere. An afternoon swim at Jungle Beach or Unawatuna's curve of sand.
Day four
Mirissa
To the surf and whales
the whale coast
A short hop east to Mirissa, the south coast's easygoing heart. The stilt fishermen of Weligama balanced over the shallows, the palm fringed sweep of Coconut Tree Hill, and a first sunset with your feet in the sand and a king coconut in hand.
Day five
Mirissa
Out with the blue whales
the biggest animal alive
A dawn boat into the deep off Mirissa, where the continental shelf drops away and blue whales, the largest animals ever to live, and sperm whales pass through (season November to April). The afternoon for a surf lesson at Weligama or simply the hammock.
Day six
Udawalawe
Inland to the elephants
elephants at dusk
North into the dry zone to Udawalawe (about two hours), home to the island's densest gathering of wild elephants. An afternoon jeep safari as the heat breaks, herds at the waterholes, calves underfoot, and the elephant transit home, where orphans are raised for the wild.
Day seven
Nuwara Eliya
Up to the tea hills
into the cool green
A climb into the highlands (about three hours) to Nuwara Eliya, 'Little England', all colonial bungalows, clipped hedges and cool mountain air. A working tea estate and factory, a cup at the source, and the green going on forever.
Day eight
Nuwara Eliya
Tea country, slowly
world's end
A dawn drive to Horton Plains for the cliff edge of World's End and the misty grasslands, or a gentler morning at Gregory Lake and a colonial high tea. The option to ride the blue hill train a stretch through the tea before the road back.
Day nine
Nuwara Eliya → Colombo
Homeward
the long goodbye
A last hill country breakfast before the drive back down to Colombo and the airport (we time it to your flight). You leave with the taste of tea, the smell of the sea, and a head full of green.
