Skip the capital. The first Thai kingdom in stone at dawn, the temple lanes of old Chiang Mai, and a mountain town that parties under fairy lights.

The days, as we would run them
Day one
Sukhothai
Arrive in the north
the first kingdom
The trip begins where Thailand itself began. You land via Bangkok and slip straight past it on a short hop or the overnight train, arriving into sleepy Sukhothai with nothing to prove on day one. A first bowl of noodles, a wander, an early night, because the ruins want you out before the heat.
Day two
Sukhothai
Cycle the old capital
ruins at dawn
There is no better way to meet a lost kingdom than on a bicycle at first light. You pedal between the lotus ponds and the serene seated Buddhas of the Historical Park while the air is still cool and the tour buses are still in Bangkok. Afternoon for the further temples or a long lazy lunch, and the kingdom is yours.
Day three
Chiang Mai
Si Satchanalai and the road north
north to the mountains
One more set of ruins before you climb. You break the drive north at Si Satchanalai, the quieter sister city deep in the trees, then carry on into the foothills to Chiang Mai by evening. Drop your bag, find a bowl of khao soi, and feel the city's easy hum.
Day four
Chiang Mai
Temples and a wok
the Lanna heart
Chiang Mai wears six hundred years of Lanna history lightly, and it happens to brew some of the best coffee in Asia. You spend the morning among the old city temples, then trade sightseeing for a wok at a hands on cooking class, with a slow crawl through the third wave cafes of Nimman in between, Ristr8to for the latte art and Akha Ama for hill tribe beans grown a few hours north. By night the bars and live music of Nimman fill up with people your age from everywhere.
Day five
Chiang Mai
Doi Suthep and the night
above the city
The mountain temple of Doi Suthep watches over Chiang Mai from the clouds, and the climb to its golden chedi is the city's great view. Spend the day as you like, a massage, a market, an elephant sanctuary in the hills, then let the evening loosen. The Sunday walking street, if your dates catch it, is the best street party in the north.
Day six
Pai
Up to Pai
the mountain road
Seven hundred and sixty two bends carry you up into the hills to Pai, and every one is worth it. You climb through jungle and rice terraces to a tiny town that runs on scooters, smoothies and good company. Catch the canyon at sunset, then wander a walking street that glows with fairy lights and guitars.
Day seven
Pai
The valley
hot springs and slow days
Pai is where backpackers come for two days and stay for two weeks. You drift down the Pai River on a tipsy tubing float with a drink in hand, soak in hot springs, and chase waterfalls on a scooter between hammock hours. The nights are small, warm and social, the kind where strangers become a crew by closing time.
Day eight
Pai
Linger in the hills
one more day
Some places are hard to leave, and Pai is one of them. A last slow morning, the bamboo bridge or the Lod cave if you want one more adventure, and a final sunset from the white Buddha above town. One more night on the walking street, because you have earned it.
Day nine
Chiang Mai
Down the mountain
the road home
The bends unwind you back to Chiang Mai and the airport. You leave with a tan, a few new friends in your phone and a kingdom's worth of history in your camera. Thailand, it turns out, was never about Bangkok.
