The days, as we would run them
Day one
Sukhothai
Arrive in the north
the first kingdom
Thailand begins, quite literally, where you land. You slip past Bangkok on a short hop or the overnight train and arrive into sleepy Sukhothai with nothing on the agenda but rest. A first bowl of noodles and an early night, because tomorrow starts before dawn.
Day two
Sukhothai
Cycle the old capital
ruins at dawn
You meet the first Thai kingdom the only way worth doing it, on a bicycle in the cool of first light. Lotus ponds, brick stupas and serene stone Buddhas sit almost empty as you pedal the Historical Park. Afternoon is yours for the further temples or a long, lazy lunch.
Day three
Chiang Mai
The road to Chiang Mai
north to the mountains
You trade ancient ruins for living history today. The drive north climbs out of the plains and into the foothills, arriving by evening in Chiang Mai, the heart of the old Lanna kingdom. Drop your bag, find some khao soi, and feel the city's easy hum.
Day four
Chiang Mai
Old city and a cooking class
temples and a wok
Chiang Mai carries six centuries lightly, and it pours some of the best coffee in Asia between the temples. The morning is for the old city, the afternoon for a Thai cooking class, and the gaps for the third wave cafes of Nimman, Ristr8to for the latte art and Akha Ama for beans grown in the hills to the north. By night the bars and live music of Nimman fill with travellers from everywhere.
Day five
Chiang Mai
Doi Suthep and the night
above the city
The mountain temple of Doi Suthep watches the city from the clouds, and its golden chedi is the great Chiang Mai view. Spend the day as you please, an elephant sanctuary, a massage, a market. Then loosen into one last northern night before the sea calls.
Day six
Koh Tao
Fly south to Koh Tao
mountains to reef
The country flips from forest to ocean today. A flight south to the Gulf and a ferry across deliver you to Koh Tao, a small green island ringed in coral and one of the best places on earth to learn to dive. By sunset you are barefoot on the sand with a cold drink and a plan.
Day seven
Koh Tao
Into the blue
under the surface
Koh Tao means turtle island, and today you find out why. You start a dive course or a snorkel trip over reefs alive with parrotfish, rays and the odd reef shark, the underwater world opening up for the first time. Evenings here are easy, beach bars and fire shows and an early, happy tiredness.
Day eight
Koh Tao
Dive and the high view
deeper still
A second day under the surface, the nerves long gone and the reef now familiar. Between dives you climb to the Koh Nang Yuan viewpoint for the postcard of three islands joined by a sandbar. The nights stay social, the company easy, the stars enormous.
Day nine
Koh Tao
Linger on the sand
one last island day
Some islands are hard to leave, and Koh Tao is one of them. A last dive or a lazy snorkel, a long swim, a hammock and a book, or a sunset from the rocks of Freedom Beach. One final island night, earned in full.
Day ten
Koh Samui
Ferry and farewell
the long way home
The ferry carries you back across to Samui and the airport, salted and sun warmed. You came for ruined kingdoms and leave a certified diver who danced through old Chiang Mai. The whole spine of Thailand, and never a night in Bangkok.
