Arrive in Tunis
the capital medinaInto Tunis, the lively capital. After the flight we keep it easy, the medina and its souks, a first couscous and brik, the cafes of the Ville Nouvelle, an early night before the history.
The ruins of Hannibal's Carthage, a blue and white village over the sea, a Roman colosseum in a small town, Saharan oases and a Star Wars desert, Tunisia, North Africa in miniature and almost to yourself.
Into Tunis, the lively capital. After the flight we keep it easy, the medina and its souks, a first couscous and brik, the cafes of the Ville Nouvelle, an early night before the history.
The ruins of ancient Carthage, Hannibal's great rival to Rome, spread above the bay, and the Bardo Museum with the world's finest collection of Roman mosaics. The blue and white clifftop village of Sidi Bou Said, jasmine and mint tea over the Mediterranean.
South to the holy city of Kairouan and its Great Mosque, one of the oldest in Islam, and the carpet souks; then the astonishing Roman amphitheatre of El Djem, a colosseum rising out of a small town. On toward the desert and the great oasis of Tozeur.
The vast date palm oasis of Tozeur and its mud brick old town, the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza with their waterfalls and palmeries, and the shimmering salt flats of Chott el Jerid, a mirage filled crossing used as a Star Wars set.
A 4x4 and a camel into the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental, the golden Saharan sand running to the horizon, the oasis of Ksar Ghilane and its Roman fort, a night in a luxury desert camp under a sky thick with stars. (Tozeur night 5)
The Berber underground troglodyte houses of Matmata, carved into the earth (and the Star Wars Lars homestead), and on to the island of Djerba, the legendary land of the lotus eaters where Ulysses lingered, its whitewashed villages and palm fringed beaches.
The old town of Houmt Souk and its souks, the ancient El Ghriba synagogue, one of the oldest in the world, the potters of Guellala, and the long sandy beaches. The gentle, sun warmed island finish, seafood and a Mediterranean sunset. (Djerba night 7)
A last beach day, a lagoon and the flamingos, a thalassotherapy spa, a final wander through the white lanes. Tunisia is North Africa concentrated, Roman, Arab, Berber, Saharan and Mediterranean all at once, and almost no one is here. (Djerba night 8)
A last island breakfast before your flight from Djerba or the transfer back to Tunis. Tunisia gives you ancient Carthage, Roman ruins, the Sahara and a Mediterranean island in one short, rich, uncrowded week.
