The days, as we would run them
Day one
Tashkent
Arrive in Tashkent
the soviet gateway
Into the capital, a green, low rise city of fountains and chandeliered metro stations. The Khast Imam complex, home to one of the world's oldest Qurans, and the heaped spice pyramids of the Chorsu bazaar. An easy first day at altitude.
Day two
Khiva
Fly west to Khiva
a city in amber
A flight to the far west and into the walls of Itchan Kala, an entire mud brick city of minarets, madrasas and palaces, almost perfectly preserved, that feels less visited than imagined. Sunset from the ramparts, the whole town glowing gold.
Day three
Khiva
Khiva, inside the walls
the time capsule
The fat turquoise stump of the unfinished Kalta Minor minaret, the harem and throne room of the Kunya Ark, the cool tiled tomb of Pakhlavan Mahmud, and the silk and woodcarving workshops. A slow day in a town the centuries forgot.
Day four
Bukhara
Across the Kyzylkum to Bukhara
the desert crossing
The great Silk Road drive, about six to seven hours across the Kyzylkum desert beside the Amu Darya river, the caravan route made real. Arrive in Bukhara, the holiest city of Central Asia, as the call to prayer goes up.
Day five
Bukhara
Bukhara, dome to dome
the holy city
The towering Kalon minaret that even Genghis Khan refused to destroy, the Ark fortress, the covered trading domes still full of carpets and silver, and the flawless 10th century Samanid mausoleum. Green tea by the Lyab i Hauz pool as the day cools.
Day six
Samarkand
Fast train to Samarkand
the jewel of the road
The high speed Afrosiyob train to Samarkand, Tamerlane's capital. Then the moment the whole trip points to, stepping into the Registan, three colossal tiled madrasas around one square, perhaps the single most magnificent sight in Central Asia.
Day seven
Samarkand
Samarkand, the blue city
tile and turquoise
The Registan again by day and lit at night, the ribbed melon dome of Tamerlane's Gur e Amir tomb, the staircase of shrines at the Shah i Zinda necropolis, tilework that stops you mid step, and the vast Bibi Khanym mosque.
Day eight
Tashkent
Back to the capital
the last bazaar
The fast train back to Tashkent for a final evening, a last wander, and a farewell plov, the saffron rice and mutton dish Uzbeks cook by the cauldron and consider a point of national pride.
Day nine
Tashkent → home
Homeward
rahmat
A slow last morning before your transfer to the airport. The Silk Road is one of the world's great journeys still hiding in plain sight, you will wonder why you waited.
